Recently two athletes from the Maleny Little Athletics Club &  representing Maleny High School,  Gregory Thomas and Daniel Osberger competed in the Queensland All Schools Combined Events Championships 2012. Daniel and Gregory took part in the U/16 Boys Heptathlon (7 events) and preformed well beyond expectations.  After entering with no expectations of probable outcomes, it soon became clear after placing 1st and 2nd in the Long Jump that they had a chance at a medal. It all came down to the nail biting last event - the 1000m run. Gregory ran the race of his life to take out the Bronze medal (by just 7 points from 4th) with 3197 points while Daniel took out the Silver Medal with 3236 points. An outstanding result!

Incredible effort boys, our club is very proud of you.
Greg & Daniel

They both hadn't trained for the height or distance before for 100m (84cms) Hurdles. But they did themselves proud by coming 2nd Greg (16.37) and 3rd Daniel (17.33)with a competitive time. They were aiming for around 17.00 but any time was going to be great.

Daniel and Greg both competed in High Jump in different pits (>160cm and <160cms)
Daniel jumped a PB (1.62m) and Greg was in a close competition with an Open woman trained by Glynnis Nunns (1.67m).

Shot Put: 3rd-Daniel 9.10m and 4th-Greg 8.80m

The 200ms - Daniel 24.53 and Greg 25.36

Greg won the Long Jump 5.70m, Daniel 2nd 5.57m

Javelin is something they both admitted they have to work on - they stayed focussed so as to record a distance for points (Daniel 24.50m and Greg 17.77m)

Greg had to do the run of his life to remain in medal contention, Daniel 3.17 (2nd) and Greg 3.20 (4th).

These two came into the competition with no expectations and soon realised they 'could maybe do OK'. They always competed like gentlemen with a sense of achievement and pride.

Final points: Silver:Daniel-3236, Bronze:Greg-3197, (4th 3190).

Athletics is a sport that needs the drive from individuals rather than a team but it certainly can lead young people with a lifelong love of sport and the outdoors, and with skills and abilities that make them adaptable athletes for all sports.
My Results

Recently our the Maleny Little Athletics Club attended the McDonalds Regional Relay Competition held in Gympie. Throughout the day everyone competed in the spirit of competition that was to be admired for ones so young. We were so proud of our athletes who sometimes competed in back-to-back events, having stepped in for others. In the field events, a number of our athletes competed in age groups up to two years older than their own, so that the older athlete had a partner. We concluded the day with some great results especially since it was the first major event our new athletes to the club had competed in.

Our U/7 and U/8 Super Sprinters – Winners of the Under 7, 4 x 70 metre Shuttle Relay, 3rd placing for Under 8, 4 x 70 metre Shuttle Relay at the McDonalds Regional Relays.
